In 1998, Dr. V.G. Mohan Prasad was the Deputy Governor for Rotary District 3200. He launched a Hepatitis B vaccination project for children in 12 revenue districts (3 from Tamil Nadu and 9 from Kerala). The goal of the project was to vaccinate 100,000 children, requiring 300,000 doses of the vaccine. At that time, the cost of the Hepatitis B vaccine was $20 for an adult dose and $10 for a pediatric dose, which was unaffordable for the masses. To address this, Dr. V.G. Mohan Prasad personally negotiated with Padma Bhushan Dr. Varaprasad Reddy, Chairman of Shanta Biotech, who agreed to reduce the cost of the vaccine to $0.90 per dose. This project was successfully completed with 1 million doses.
